HSDA at NYU Student Chapter Mission Statement

The NYU HDA Student Chapter has made huge strides in the past five years in terms of membership, community engagement and professional development. Being situated in New York City, with the vast majority of our patients representing an array of Hispanic backgrounds, our chapter’s main mission is to promote and advocate for the oral health issues of the hispanic community through the education of our students, faculty and those we serve.

We have been able to increase our membership dramatically by providing our members with not only a sense of community at the largest dental school in the nation, but by also developing innovative programming aimed at helping our members become culturally competent and clinically proficient oral health care leaders. These programs have included, but are not limited to: Alumni Panels and a New Dentist Series from Recent Alumni and our Faculty Advisor, Loan Repayment Lectures from a speaker from the NHSC, a Lecture on the Dental Treatment of the Underserved: Examining the Roles of Representation and Cultural Competence and a Lecture on how to tackle Race, Racism, and Health Equity. In conjunction with this, we have participated in ongoing outreach efforts both Globally in Ecuador and Nepal, and locally at the Mexican Consulate of NYC, a nearby homeless meal preparation program, as well as serving as mentors for underrepresented minority high school and college students interested in dentistry through pipeline programming at NYU.

In order to reach the wider NYU population, we also distribute a weekly Newsletter and our own Spanish/English booklets to help with dialogue in the clinics. Our members also participate in an ongoing research study about Hispanic patient health literacy by interviewing patients in the clinic, in an attempt to find ways to alleviate some of the disparities experienced by our population.

Lastly, our members have also engaged professionally in the national chapter by attending the HDA National Conference, participating in the Nuestros Niños Contest and the Crest-Oral B Orgullo Competitions, and networking with National Chapter leaders. We feel passionate about engaging with chapters from other local dental schools, as well as collaborating with members of the NYU HSDA chapter to promote interprofessional collaboration among minority health professionals, and have hosted several events at the college to accomplish this.
