Basic Scaling Techniques for the Dental Professional

This presentation will feature principles of hand activated periodontal instrumentation, including the essentials of ergonomics and instrument grasp and how they relate to the prevention of musculoskeletal stress and how specific design features of universal curets, area specific curets, and sickle scalers relate to the instruments use.

Course Objectives:

  • Recognize the importance of ergonomics and neutral position in minimizing exposure to musculoskeletal stress.
  • Understand the relationship between correct finger position in the modified pen grasp and the prevention of musculoskeletal problems.
  • Understand the relationship between correct finger position in the modified pen grasp and the control of a periodontal instrument during instrumentation.
  • Recognize the design features of universal curets, area specific curets and sickle scalers.
  • Discuss how instruments design features relate to the instruments use.

Guest Speaker:

Sandra Castellanos, AAS, RDH, BS, MA, CHES - is an Associate Professor in the Department of Allied Health, Dental Hygiene Unit, at Eugenio Maria de Hostos Community College in New York where she teaches clinical dental hygiene practice and clinical instructions. Professor Castellanos served as President of the New York State Dental Hygiene Educators’ Association, has published multiple peer reviewed articles and has presented at the national and international level. She is active in dental outreach activities throughout New York City.

Sandra Castellanos practiced dentistry for 13 years providing comprehensive dental services to low-income patients in her native country, Colombia. Her main area of interest is oral disease prevention.
